About the Project

The Trans Tapestry will showcase the very fabric of what trans visibility and identity means to trans, non-binary, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse folks across Newfoundland and Labrador. This project is a collaboration between TSNL, Quadrangle NL (The Quad NL) and Safe Harbour Outreach Project (SHOP) as we honour the work of the Trans Needs Committee through their Legacy Fund. We are inviting Two-Spirit people and trans, non-binary, and gender diverse folks of all gender identities and expressions across all ages, locations, and intersections of identity – including those that are BIPOC, engage in sex work, are incarcerated or have previously been incarcerated, migrants, living with disabilities, and all life experiences that reflect the diversity of trans lives across our province – to contribute to this project.

The artpiece will be unveiled on Trans Day Of Visibility: March 31, 2021 at a community opening in St. John’s. From there, the tapestry will begin a journey across the province to be displayed at public events at various urban and rural locations that celebrate the diversity of our community. Accompanying the tapestry will be a list of those contributors who have agreed to have their name and location included.

By embodying the narratives of its contributors, this piece will celebrate and help By embodying the narratives of its contributors, this piece will celebrate and educate the people of our province. Our collaboration aims to provide a voice to the rich texture of trans, non-binary, Two-Spirit, gender diverse communities in Newfoundland and Labrador and move beyond restrictive notions of who trans people are. Be a part of the story being sewn together by our diverse trans community!

Short-Form Submission Call for

BISEXUAL THRILLERS

SUBMISSIONS OPEN for Bisexual Thriller stories

Engen Books Ltd. and Quadrangle are proud to be teaming up again after the positive reception to 'Acceptance: Stories at the Centre of Us!'

Over the last six years, the Engen's has become one of the preeminent publishers of fiction anthologies in Atlantic Canada. We have been home to some amazing established talent and helped some new authors break through that have gone on to dominate their fields, becoming bestsellers in their own genres. The From the Rock series is going strong, and we're happy that our Quadrangle partnership is growing as well!

Quadrangle’s mission is to create a community centre for 2SLGBTQAI+ individuals and organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador, a space that is a resource for building community resilience and connection, and that provides supports for existing initiatives of our 2SLGBTQAI+ community. As a registered charity, both working toward having a community centre, and taking up projects like this one contribute to Quad’s vision of contributing to sustainable, positive, community connections. All profits from this collection will go towards that goal.

We are currently accepting submissions for the second anthology in our partnership series with Quadrangle. This collection will feature strong fiction by and about members of the 2SLBGTQIA+ community.

We decided to pick a different genre and group under the 2SLGBTQIA+ banner with each collection to focus on, and to choose each pairing at random! The dice decided upon BISEXUAL THRILLER for this year's combination!

When is the deadline?

February 27th, 2023. Expected for publication in Fall of 2023

What is a Thriller?

It's a very broad term for a genre that gets your blood pumping, and is largely action-oriented. Action movies fall under thriller, as do spy and espionage stories. Crime and mystery stories fall under Thriller. Horror and suspense stories also fall under Thriller.

Note: while we will be accepting well-written stories that fall under the horror genre, we will not be considering stories in which the bisexual character represented plays the role of either monster or victim. Those tropes have been done to death, they're not for this collection.

Further note: we WILL be accepting stories featuring positive 2SLGBTQIA+ representation from outside the "Bisexual Thriller" combination, but as that will be the main focus of the collection, stories with a Bisexual or Thriller take, or both, have a better shot of making it in.

What is the target audience?

For this specific collection, we’re going for an equivalent of PG to PG-13. Rather than limit our authors creatively, we encourage them to write from the heart and allow us to work with them to fine-tune the work after the fact.

What does it pay?

Authors are paid $0.01 CAD per word, to an upper limit of 7000 words.

Are there minimum/ maximum word limits?

There are not minimum word limits. In the past we have had stories as short as 250 words. We have set 7,000 words as a maximum word limit, only because we anticipate many submissions and want to fit as many as we can in.🙂

Can someone submit more than one story?

Of course! We may take one or both! We have had the same author in the same collection multiple times in the past.

Who can submit?

Any Canadian author looking to celebrate great Canadian writing! There is also no age restriction. Anyone over Canadian Age-of-Consent (16 years of age) can submit and sign the print release on their own. Entrants younger than that will have to sign the print release with a parent of guardian.🙂

Who keeps the printing rights?

You do! Engen Books Ltd merely gains the right to print your story in this one collection. You keep the rights to your story and property: so if it takes off and becomes a huge hit, you keep all the benefits!

Do you accept reprints?

Yes, so long as you hold the copyright to allow us to publish it in the collection and the other criteria for the collection are met. Please tell us if you are submitting a reprint. We do give priority to new stories except in extreme cases.

How do I submit?

All submissions should be directed to submissions@engenbooks.com and should be sent from a reliable email address that you check regularly (we will contact all applicants through email with the status of their submission once the deadline has passed).

When do submissions close?

February 27, 2023 11:59 PM Newfoundland Standard Time.

Do you have questions?

Email them to submissions@engenbooks.com with the words Quad Question in the subject line, we will answer you post haste!🙂

Happy Writing!

We regret that due to the volume of submissions we receive we will be unable to acknowledge receipt of entries. We will contact you after submissions close, usually within 30 days, to let you know if we accepted your work or not.

Description

We are currently looking for artwork from 2SLGBTQIA+ Indigenous individuals. Artistic expression in any medium or format is encouraged. This artwork will be featured in a pre-recorded video and a photo gallery which will be shared on social media. The video launch will be followed by a webinar featuring artists and activists/speakers to discuss the Indigenous views on gender, sexuality and the intersectionality of these identities, followed by a Q & A session. Our hope with this project is to give a platform to Indigenous groups and community members so that they may share their narratives, and have them celebrated as part of the diverse past, present and future of our province.

We invite participants to submit works that are reflections on the intersections of Indigeneity, gender, and sexuality as pertaining to healthcare. In an effort to decolonize our understanding of medicine and healthcare, these submissions will consider these intersections through Indigenous ways of knowing.

We have a limited number of spaces and will accept submissions on the first-come basis. The artists will be compensated for their submissions.

Are you ready to disrupt the status quo, shake up the establishment, and be a catalyst to improve 2SLGBTQIA+ health in Newfoundland and Labrador? If your answer to that question is “yes”, then we’ve got a FREE program for you!

Starting in January, Quadrangle NL (http//thequadnl.com) and the Community Based Research Centre (CBRC, http://cbrc.net) are proud to launch Pivot NL . This online version is a follow-up to our in-person edition held in March in 2020 in St. John's.

Pivot is a FREE community health leadership program for 2SLGBTQIA+ people who are looking to lead change in their communities and improve 2SLGBTQIA+ health. Pivot is designed to improve health literacy, as well as teach participants how to develop and implement community-driven responses to the challenges facing our communities.

Any 2SLGBTQIA+ resident of Newfoundland and Labrador (16 and older) is welcomed to participate. As this is an online program, you will need access to high-speed internet and a computer.

(Un)Covered: Sex At The Kitchen Table

Quadrangle NL with Community-Based Research Centre are currently creating a webinar series around sexual health called "(Uncovered): Sex at the Kitchen Table" a more relaxed setting to talk about sex with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The overall vibe of the webinars is meant to recreate a talk with friends about experiences and knowledge. Starting on Oct 3rd 2020 until Mar 20th, 2021 on scheduled Saturdays at 6PM(NT). This is a community-driven project stemming from Pivot St. John's, a 4 day community health leadership program for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in St. John’s held earlier this year. The participants of this program are developing this 8-part webinar series around their chosen topic of inclusive sexual education and healthcare.

So grab your cup of tea and join us as we discuss sexual health, identities, sexualities, proclivities and more; yes, even the taboo stuff. Sexual health education is an ongoing, and essential process, but is often lacking from dominant/ mainstream education systems. We are often given misinformation, or no information, leading many communities erased from conversations about sex and sexuality, and a lack of safer sex practices within.

Register for the engaging, intersectional, authentic, and sexy conversation that will bust myths, provide support and resources, and leave you wanting more. Sign up for all 8 parts or just the ones you find most interesting.

CALLING ALL 2SLGBTQAI+ FICTION WRITERS IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR!

Engen Books is accepting submissions for our newest anthology, celebrating the 2SLGBTQAI+ community, to be available in the summer of 2021. Whether you are well-established, or a new author, please consider submitting your work for this groundbreaking anthology.

Engen Books is proud to announce they have partnered with Quadrangle to make this collection a reality, celebrating 2SLGBTQAI+ writers and stories.

We’re looking for stories by and for the 2SLGBTQAI+ community that feature 2SLGBTQAI+ characters in any stage of life and from a range of cultures, identities, and experiences. We will consider submissions in a wide variety of genres and styles, including General Fiction, Science-Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Romance, and most other genres imaginable!

Deadline for Submissions: March 31 2021 but get your stories in as quick as you can, as it gives our wonderful editors more time to work with you and make sure it is as good as it can possibly be!

Over the last decade, the Engen Books has become one of the preeminent anthology producers in Atlantic Canada, with our groundbreaking From the Rock series and, more recently, Terror Nova. We have been home to some amazing established talent and helped some new authors break through that have gone on to dominate their fields, becoming bestsellers in their own right. From the Rock is a title readers consistently ask for, review well, and is a great way for avid readers to get introduced to indie talent they might find interesting. In 2018 the series’ third entry, Chillers from the Rock, went Bestseller on pre-orders alone, and every collection in the series has done so since!

Editors for this anthology include: Ailsa Craig, Sulaimon Giwa, AJ Ryan, Sarah Thompson.

All profits from this collection will go to Quadrangle and their continuing efforts to help and support the local LGBTQI2S+ community.

What is the target audience?

For this specific collection, we are loosening our typical “PG to PG-13” guideline and allow stories of more mature content. That said we will not be including explicitly adult content in this collection. While we respect and acknowledge the careers of local erotica authors, we will be accepting romance but not erotica for this particular collection. However, rather than limit the creativity of our authors, we encourage them to write from the heart and allow us to work with them to fine-tune the work after the fact if we feel it strays too far outside our vision for the collection.

What does it pay?

This collection pays authors $0.01 CAD per word to an upper limit of 7,500 words.

Are there minimum/ maximum word limits?

There are not minimum word limits. In the past we have had stories as short as 250 words. We have set 7,500 words as a maximum word limit, only because we anticipate many submissions and want to fit as many as we can in.

Can someone submit more than one story?

Of course! We may take one or both! We have had the same author in the same collection multiple times in the past.

Who can submit?

Any Canadian author looking to represent the stories, lives and creativity of 2SLGBTQAI + folks! There is also no age restriction. Anyone over Canadian Age-of-Consent (16 years of age) can submit and sign the print release on their own. Entrants younger than that will have to sign the print release with a parent or guardian.

Who keeps the printing rights?

You do! Engen Books Ltd and Quadrangle merely gain the right to print your story in this one collection. You keep the rights to your story and property: so if it takes off and becomes a huge hit, you keep all the benefits!
