New census data from Statcan confirms what community advocates have been saying for years

“The [Statcan] numbers show a clear case for funding,” said Murphy. “I see this as an opportunity for [the provincial government] to acknowledge what many organizations have been saying for decades, that the community is here and it’s thriving. The LGBTQ Community Capacity Fund is a lifeline for Canada’s frontline queer and trans services. It’s about to expire.

“Many of the smaller, more rural organizations that received grants through the Fund, such as the Quadrangle LGBTQ Community Centre in Newfoundland and Labrador, were also the first LGBTQ community service organizations of their kind in their region – and their closure would be devastating for local queer and trans people.”

Quadrangle Seeking Feedback on Future Inclusive Community Centre

Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the last provinces in the country that doesn’t have a physical space for 2SLGBTQAI+ community members and organizations.

That’s why Local charity, Quadrangle has a mission to create an inclusive community centre to provide both supports and a place for building connections.

Quadrangle launched a province-wide survey to help guide the building of the centre to ensure it meets the needs of the community.

Executive Director, Charles Murphy says in order to create a flexible community space, they need to hear from those it will serve.

The survey will remain open until August 20th.

Newfoundland's The Quadrangle Receives Funding

"We need multi-year core funding and a fully accessible physical space to support our work and the work of the community for 2SLGBTQIA+ people of the province. Right now we have this Federal funding to support our capacity building work but that ends come March 31st 2022. We need stable funding and supports to ensure this initiative becomes a sustainable reality."
