PIVOT 3.0

Pivot Training is a 2SLGBTQIA+ Sexual and Reproductive Health Training and Leadership program to enhance health knowledge and skills in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and to apply knowledge and skills to a community-intervention to evoke change. Participants have to be in Newfoundland and Labrador and part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

In collaboration with the Community-Based Research Centre - CBRC, Quadrangle NL’s Pivot team has been working to develop a project that advocates for the development of a medical course around gender-affirming care in NL.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, 2SLGBTQIA+ people do not receive adequate care, and Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse clients face further barriers to care. There is a lack of medical care in the province that is affirming, accepting, and relevant for Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse clients. This is in part due to healthcare providers’ lack of training around GAC. Quadrangle NL’s Pivot participants are asking MUN Med Continuing Medical Education (CME) initiative to hear the needs of our community. Thus, our calls to action are:

- The development of a comprehensive course around gender-affirming care as an option within CME courses

-Engagement with local experts in the community and those with lived experience throughout development

- A thorough review process of course once developed

The course should include:

- Information around the provision of hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

- Transition supports and information around gender affirming gear

- Information around gender dysphoria and mental health impacts

- How to provide a gender-affirming environment

- Sexual health information and services

Want to participate in the advocacy? Community members can stop by the Quadrangle NL space to pick up a postcard to mail to MUN CME. FREE embroidered patches designed by Elijah Martel will be available to community members SOON! Stop by during our open hours to pick up your postcard.

Providing appropriate medical services for Two-Spirit, trans and gender-diverse people of Newfoundland and Labrador is not only healthcare, it is life saving. Allyship saves lives.

A huge thank you to Pivot participants, community advisory team members, and Elijah for making this project possible!
